After a challenging hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Junior Achievement Uganda has successfully relaunched its Job Shadow Program, a flagship initiative designed to bridge the gap between education and the workplace by giving students a real-life experience in professional environments. This is the first time the program has been held since the onset of Covid-19, marking a significant step forward in youth career development.
The Job Shadow Program allows students, aged 13 to 19, to spend a day in actual workplaces, paired with professionals from various industries, including CEOs, heads of departments, and retail outlets. This experience not only provides students with an opportunity to explore their career aspirations but also gives them valuable insight into what it takes to be successful in their chosen fields. Junior Achievement Uganda’s goal through this initiative is to inspire students to work hard and follow their dreams.
This year, Junior Achievement Uganda partnered with Side B Partners, a strategic partner that has been instrumental in making the program a success. Side B Partners brought their extensive network and industry expertise to the table, helping to identify organizations and professionals who could mentor students through the Job Shadow experience. Together with Junior Achievement, Side B Partners helped ensure that participating students gained a rich, hands-on learning experience across diverse industries.
The program specifically targets students who have been part of Junior Achievement’s Company Program, allowing them to apply what they have learned in the classroom to a real-world business environment. Prospective host organizations are identified in collaboration with Side B Partners, and potential slots are secured for students to shadow professionals across various sectors.
Program Organization
The program targets in-school students aged 13 to 19 who have previously participated in the JA Company Program. Junior Achievement Uganda collaborates with prospective host organizations to identify available slots where students can shadow professionals.
Once potential slots are confirmed, JA shares this information to recruit students from one or multiple schools to participate in the Job Shadow experience. This one-day program allows students to immerse themselves in the professional environment.
The Job Shadow Experience
On Job Shadow Day, participating students are attached to identified officers and engage in official activities throughout the day. Students have the opportunity to attend meetings, witness business dealings, and even share meals with the host officers, providing them with invaluable insights into the workplace.

Looking to the Future
As the first post-pandemic edition of the Job Shadow Program, this week represents a significant milestone for Junior Achievement Uganda. The organization plans to expand the program in the future, reaching even more students and creating stronger partnerships with businesses and employers across the country.
