In 2009, Jane Namara in Senior Two at Holy Cross Lake View in Uganda took a bold step that would change the course of her life. She joined Junior Achievement (JA) Uganda through the Girls in Leadership Program, a platform designed to nurture confidence, self-reliance, and leadership skills among young girls. Under the mentorship of Ms. Rachael Mwagale, she embarked on a transformative journey that laid the foundation for her future as a leader and changemaker.
With the support and encouragement she received from JA Uganda, her self-trust grew, and she began to envision a future where she could make a tangible difference in her community. Inspired by her experiences and driven by a passion to empower others, she later founded Hands of Hope, an organization dedicated to uplifting vulnerable women and girls through skill-based empowerment initiatives.
Her commitment to change recently gained national recognition when her organization applied for the prestigious MTN Uganda Changemakers Grant. Out of 2,000 applicants, Hands of Hope emerged as the second-best changemaker initiative in the country—a remarkable achievement that underscored the impact of her work in transforming lives.

The winning project, “Skills for Life,” is based in Iganga District and focuses on equipping women and girls with practical skills such as sewing, embroidery, basket weaving, jewelry making, and the production of reusable sanitary pads. Additionally, the program includes financial literacy training to help beneficiaries manage and grow their income sustainably. With support from the MTN Changemakers initiative, the project will procure sewing machines and essential tailoring materials, empowering over 70 women and youth to create economic opportunities for themselves and their families.
Jane Namara’s journey from JA Uganda alumna to a nationally recognized changemaker is a testament to the power of mentorship, resilience, and community-driven impact. She exemplifies the very essence of leadership and social entrepreneurship—turning challenges into opportunities and using her skills to uplift others.
Through her work, she continues to inspire hope, drive positive change, and contribute to sustainable transformation in Uganda. Her story is a shining example of how Junior Achievement Uganda can plant the seeds of greatness, nurturing young minds to become the change they wish to see in the world.
